Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism is sometimes seen as more of a way of life rather than a religion. It was founded in 1930 by Marcus Garvey in Jamaica. Rastafarianism was developed among very poor people who felt that the only thing that society had to offer them was additional suffering. Rastafarianism has no formal organization and many variations. The movement is united by the belief in Haile Selassie as the messiah, the influence of Jamaican culture, resistance of oppression, and pride in African heritage.
Rastafarians believe in the Judeo-Christian god, which the call Jah. Rastafarianism emphasizes Old Testament laws and prophecies and its beliefs are based in Judaism and Christianity. Rastafarians believe that Jah was shown on earth as Jesus, who they believe is black, and Emperor Haile Selassie. Rastafarians do not believe in an afterlife, but see Africa, which they call Zion, as a heaven on earth.
Rastafarians are most well known for their use of marijuana for religious purposes. Rastafarians call marijuana ganja and believe it to be the holy herb which was given to them by god. Rastafarians also use marijuana for medicinal purposes. A more visible practice that Rastafarians have is wearing their hair in dreadlocks. They do this because the Bible commands not to cut one’s hair. Also it has the appearance of a lion’s mane which represents strength and Africa. The colors of Rastafarianism, red, gold, and green, are also very well known.
The most well-known Rastafarian is Bob Marley, whose reggae music helped recognize the Rastafarian movement worldwide.
