Judaism
Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world today. It is believed to be founded in the year 1300 BC by Abraham. Today, there are 14 million Jews in the world and the can be found mostly in Israel, Europe, and USA.
The main belief of Judaism is that there is only one god. Many other religions were influenced by this such as Christianity and Islam. When god rescued the Jews from slavery in Egypt, he gave to them the Ten Commandments and other religious and ethical guidelines that can be found in the Torah.
Today, Judaism is divided into three main branches: Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. If you had to put these three on a spectrum, Orthodox and Reform would be at opposite ends and Conservative would be somewhere in the middle. Orthodox Judaism is the most conservative of the three; it maintains all the traditional rituals and practices. Conservative Judaism takes a moderate approach to apply Judaism to the modern world. Reform Judaism maintains Jewish identity and some traditions, but takes a very open-minded approach to most beliefs and practices.
No matter which Jewish movement someone is a part of there are certain holidays that all Jews celebrate. These holidays include Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, and Passover. Also, all boys at the age of 13 become a Bar Mitzvah and all girls become a Bat Mitzvah at the age of 12.
There are many Jewish traditions and many of them are the same among the different movements. But it is also important to remember that traditions also vary among families as well as among movements.
