Islam

Islam is the second largest religion in the world with 1.3 billion followers. Islam was founded in 622 CE in Mecca, Saudi Arabia by the Prophet Muhammad.
Islam is a monotheistic religion, based on the Prophet Muhammad’s revelations. These revelations were recorded thirty years after Muhammad’s death in the Qur’an, the sacred text of Islam. Muslims believe that Qur’an is the literal word of god that the Angel Gabriel revealed to Muhammad.
Islam means submission, which is the religion’s central belief, submitting to the will of god. All Islamic practices are based upon the Five Pillars of Islam: confession of faith, daily prayer, fasting during Ramadan, pilgrimage, and charity.
In Islam there are different sects: Sunni, Sufi, and Shi’a. Most Muslims are Sunni Muslims and are known as Sunnis or Sunnites. Sunni is based in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, which is structured under four schools of thought. The four schools of law – the Hanafi, the Maliki, the Shafi’I, and the Hanbali – are sometimes mistakenly thought to be different sects, but what they actually associated to four great scholars of Islam. Sufism is more of a mystical way to approach Islam, than it is a sect. The third sect, Shi’a Islam, is what most Muslims who are not Sunnis are. Sunnis disagree with Shi’ite beliefs that deal with some of the prophets’ companions and with some of their texts.
In Islam the different sects are not always at peace with each other. Members of one Islamic group usually do not recognize members of another group as member Muslims. Conflict between sects is very common.
