Hare Krishna

Hare Krishna was founded in 1965 in New York and San Francisco and has about 260,000 followers. Hare Krishna is based in Hinduism and is accepted by most Hindus as a sect of Hinduism.
Hare Krishnas believe that we are living in an evil age, but can reach salvation by way of a permanent Krishna-consciousness. Krishna-consciousness can be reached by living ethically and the Hare Krishna chant. Salvation is accomplished by Bhakti yoga, which is a form of yoga known as the way of devotion.
There are to types of members of Hare Krishna: congregational and temple-based. Congregational members practice Krishna-consciousness while living a normal life and attend temple for worship. Temple-based members live in the temple and follow four principles. These principles are: no eating of meat, fish, or eggs, no alcohol and drugs, no gambling, and the practice of celibacy except for the purpose of procreation within a marriage.
The main ritual of Hare Krishna is the chanting of mantras. The main mantra is:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare,
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama Rama, Hare Hare
This mantra is thought to be the most effective means of self purification; it expresses one’s devotion to the gods Hare, Krishna, and Rama.
Hare Krishna males are known to wear white or saffron robes and shave their heads except for a topknot. Women wear bright colored saris just like the Hindu women do.
