Christianity
Christianity is the largest religion in the world with about two billion followers. Christianity was founded in 33 AD with the teachings, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Today there are many forms and beliefs that surround the belief in Jesus Christ.
Christianity is a monotheistic religion, meaning that Christians only believe in one god. This being said, they also believe that the one god they believe in is made up of three people: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ being the Son. The Bible is the sacred text of Christianity. The Bible is made up of the Old Testament and the New Testament. All Christians regard the Bible to be authoritative, but the different sects of Christianity come from differing views of the extent of the Bible’s authority. Christianity is divided into three major branches: Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism.
Roman Catholicism is lead by the Pope and is considered to be the continuation of the historical church as it has developed over the centuries. Roman Catholics believe in the saints and Mary, and use a rosary. Eastern Orthodoxy was formed in 1054 AD. Eastern Orthodoxy does not believe in the Pope and stresses the use of icons in worship. Eastern Orthodoxy also includes Greek, Russian, and other Orthodox churches. Protestantism evolved during the Reformation in the 16th century. Protestants do not acknowledge the Pope and disagree with many traditions and beliefs of the Catholic Church. Lutherans, Baptists, Presbyterians, and many others are considered to be Protestants.
Although each branch of Christianity has its differences, they are also similar in many ways. They all consist of a Sunday worship service, private and communal prayer, and the rites of baptism and communion.
The most important holiday in Christianity is Easter. The week before Easter is called Holy Week. Christmas is also an important holiday in Christianity because it is the day that Jesus was born.
Just like any other religion, Christianity has evolved and will continue to evolve through out time.
