Cao Dai

Cao Dai is a Vietnamese religious movement that was founded by Ngo Van Chieu in 1926. Today, Cao Dai has about two million followers. It takes different aspects from other religions such as Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Catholicism. Cao Dai takes ethical principles from Confucianism and theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, and has some influence from Catholicism. Cao Dai is the supreme being, which is a Taoist label for the supreme god. Cao Dai refers to a higher power like any other religion, but by using the term Cao Dai it avoids gender, personality, and other human characteristics. In Cao Dai god is represented as the Divine Eye, an eye in a triangle. Some of Cao Dai’s saints are Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, Julius Caesar, Muhammad, and Joan of Arc.
The purpose of life in Cao Dai is peace with every individual and harmony in the world. Followers of Cao Dai also try to avoid bad karma. Cao Dai supports compliance with the three duties and the five virtues of Confucianism. The three duties are between king and citizen, father and child, and husband wife. The five virtues are humanity, obligation, civility, knowledge, and reliability.
Cao Dai is considered to be a syncretistic religion with a strong nationalist political character.
