Buddhism

Buddhism was founded in the year 500 BCE by Siddharta Gautama. Siddharta Gautama was an Indian prince who lived a very sheltered life. One day he was allowed to leave the palace to go on a journey. On this journey Siddharta saw an old man, a sick man, a poor man, and the body of a dead man. Siddharta was shocked and upset at the suffering of the world. At that moment he decided to leave his family in order to find enlightenment. One day, Siddharta sat under a tree and promised not to move until he reached enlightenment. A few days later, Siddharta came to be known as the Buddha, meaning the enlightened one. For the rest of his life, Buddha taught the path of liberation from suffering and established a community of monks.
Today there are more than 360 million Buddhists in the world. Although Buddhist beliefs are different among the different sects, they all admire the Buddha and the goal of ending suffering. The Buddha’s teachings include the four noble truths and the eightfold path. The four noble truths are:
1. Life means suffering
2. The origin of suffering is attachment
3. The cessation of suffering is attainable
4. The path to the cessation of suffering
According to the Buddha the eightfold path is a way to end suffering. The eight aspects of the eightfold path are: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Together, the four noble truths and the eightfold path are the basis of Buddhism.
Today Buddhism is nearly extinct in India, but can be found in Southeast Asia, China, and Japan.
